This non-­‐accredited course is designed to equip you with the skills required to practice in an online environment. The aim of this course is to provide students with the essential skills and knowledge in order to provide clear, supportive and effective practice to clients in an online counselling environment. This course is specifically designed for practitioners in the field of psychology therapy, counselling, emotional well-being and mental health who wish to gain the specific skills and knowledge required to assist people online (Zoom, Skype, Phone, etc.) suffering loss, grief and trauma.
Course Aims:
The broad aim of this course is to acquaint students with the ability to work with clients in an online environment. The objectives of the course are to:
  • Provide a working knowledge as an online counsellor
  • Form relationships in which insight or change can take place
  • Ensure ethical practices are applied
  • Put learnings into practice to include confidentiality and privacy awareness

Entry Requirements:
The ideal applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution. However, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions such as work experience, the Trauma Institute may admit others who can show evidence of suitability for candidature.
Learning Objectives:
On successful completion of the course, you should be able to:
  • Understand the terminology and work as an online counsellor
  • Discuss and demonstrate how an appropriate relationship can begin to be built online
  • Create content for the online counselling contract and explore various ways to contracting with clients
  • Demonstrate counselling asynchronously (time delayed) by email and message boards
  • Maintain confidentiality, encryption, digital signatures, computer privacy, and boundary issues
  • Identify the pros and cons of the difficult methods of counselling
  • Demonstrate how you can work with words therapeutically online
  • Discuss ways in which image and sound can be used in online counselling
  • Understand the role of supervision while enabling challenge, professional development to take place
  • Discuss some ways the boundaries of counselling alliance can be stretched through uncontracted contact between counsellor and client, and the ethical issues that can arise when this happen
  • Put your learnings into practice by focusing on specific issues arising from working online
  • Understand and apply a range of theories used with online clients typically, and reflect on whether or how you will be able to maintain your core model when working online
Intake dates:
Every 1st Monday of each month.
Please note, there is no new intake course during December and January.
*You must enrol in a term within a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the start of the elected term date. Late and cancellation fees may occur if failure to do so. Your application/enrolment approval can take up to 4 weeks.
